Gal Gadot Responds To Wonder Woman Bisexuality News

Greg Rucka, who is writing the current run of Wonder Woman comics, recently made headlines when he confirmed that Wonder Woman is canonically bisexual. This revelation received an overwhelmingly positive response from cultural critics and comic book fans alike, but it did make many wonder if the upcoming 2017 Wonder Woman film would follow suit and portray a queer Wonder Woman.

Variety recently sat down with Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot to discuss her role in the film, including whether or not her Wonder Woman would be portrayed as bisexual. Here’s what she had to say:

“It’s not something we’ve explored. It never came to the table, but when you talk theoretically about all the women on Themyscira and how many years she was there, then what he [Rucka] said makes sense. In this movie she does not experience any bisexual relationships. But it’s not about that. She’s a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts.”

While the news that Wonder Woman’s bisexuality won’t be portrayed on screen will certainly disappoint some, the fact that Gadot readily admits that her version of the character could very well still be queer regardless of whether it’s shown or not is arguably something that should be praised. Would it have been better to not give Wonder Woman any romantic relationships at all (Chris Pine plays her love interest in the film) and just let her be her awesome self? Probably. Regardless, it sounds like Gadot and director Patty Jenkins are determined to get the character right in pretty much every other regard:

For her [Jenkins] it was very important to not just portray her as a goddess, but to tell a very simple story of someone who believes in good and believes that people should be happy and lead safe, happy lives. We cared a lot about simplifying Wonder Woman’s agenda, because it is simple. It was her heart that we cared about, not her being this warrior. When you tell a story from the heart, all of us can relate, because all of us want to live in a safe, quiet, and peaceful world.
