G.I. Joe Movies To Be Rebooted For “Millennials”

According to a new profile on Hasbro in the L.A. Times, the company is looking to create “its own Marvel-sized movie universe.” The hope is to tie together a number of Hasbro franchises, such as G.I. Joe and Transformers, as well as launching new franchises and making moves into animated features, such as the My Little Pony movie arriving later this year.

If you’ll recall, the last G.I. Joe movie was 2013’s Retaliation, starring Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis, which was barely able to break even. Evidently, Hasbro wants to take a different approach to the franchise going forward, which of course translates to “a more millennial approach.” Here’s Simon Waters, who oversees consumer products at Hasbro Studios, on the matter:

“The world has changed, and I think you’re going to see G.I. Joe changing with it,” he said. “There’s going to be a much more contemporary approach to the whole franchise, and that will allow us to develop different characters.”

Considering the previous two G.I. Joe movies both took place in modern day, it’s unclear what Waters means by taking a more “contemporary approach” to the franchise. We can only assume that more explosions and lots of post-credits teasers are in store for us whenever the millennial-friendly edition of G.I. Joe sees the light of day.
