George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola are a lot alike in many ways. Both directors got their starts in the 1970s “New Hollywood” era and had enormous success early in their careers, but the difference is that Coppola exited the Hollywood mainstream scene much earlier than his New Hollywood counterpart. Lucas has been devoted to Star Wars for most of his career, but now he’s finished with the franchise . . . and Coppola couldn’t be happier.

During a recent speech given at the Marrakech International Film Festival, The Godfather director spoke critically of his friend’s decision to stick with Star Wars for so long:

“I think Star Wars, it’s a pity, because George Lucas was a very experimental crazy guy and he got lost in this big production and never got out of it,” Coppola reflected.

“I still hope that he made so much money out of it that he will just make some little movies. He promises me that he will.”

It’s unclear at this point what Lucas will do next now that he’s done with Star Wars, but from the sounds of it, Coppola would like to see him return to his more experimental, pre-Star Wars work such as THX 1138 and American Graffiti.

As long as he doesn’t fiddle around with the older Star Wars films anymore, we can’t wait to see what Lucas’s next venture will be.
