The final moments of 2015’s Furious 7 seemed like a pretty clear indication that Brian O’Connor, the character played by the late Paul Walker, would be written out of future installments of the franchise. However, according to Walker’s brothers, we may not have seen the last of O’Connor after all.
Cody and Caleb Walker, who helped finish up their brother’s unfinished scenes in Furious 7 after the actor died in a November 2013 car accident, recently told Entertainment Tonight they have discussed the possibility of bringing the character back with franchise creator and star Vin Diesel.
“I had a phone call with Vin for about an hour and we really discussed this a while back,” said Caleb. “He wanted [our] blessing.” Diesel asked the pair if and when they thought it “would be acceptable to maybe bring Paul’s character back … to really kind of let his fans know he’s still out there.”
Production on Furious 7 was delayed for several months after Walker’s death, with the studio ultimately deciding to use a mix of CGI (at a reported cost of $50 million) and Cody and Caleb as stand-ins to help finish Walker’s scenes. At the end of the movie, Brian leaves Dom’s (Diesel) crew to live with his family.
“Universal wants to make sure to be respectful of Paul and his image too, and his family,” Cody added.
The brothers did not indicate whether Brian will appear in the next Fast & Furious movie, which will co-star Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren alongside returning regulars such as Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, and is due for a 2017 release. That being said, there are plans for two additional films in the franchise after the eighth installment, so there’s plenty of opportunity for Brian to come back if Universal decides to go that route.
