Dunkirk director Christopher Nolan has confirmed that actor Michael Caine has a small cameo in his new World War II film.

In an interview with NJ.com, Nolan revealed that the voice heard on the radio talking to the Royal Air Force man early in the film is indeed Caine’s.

While some fans had already identified Caine’s voice, Nolan said that he’s surprised more viewers weren’t able to spot the cameo, noting “he has really one of the most distinctive voices in cinema.” He added that Caine’s role was intended as a small nod to the actor’s role as Squadron Leader Canfield in the 1969 film Battle of Britain.

Nolan is a filmmaker who enjoys working with the same core group of actors — he’s worked with Dunkirk stars Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy multiple times in the past — and this habit is not lost on him, as the director cheekily added “And also, it’s Michael. He has to be in all my films, after all.”

Dunkirk, which recounts the harrowing evacuation of Allied troops from the north of France during the early stages of World War II, released last weekend and had one of the strongest openings of Nolan’s career on the back of rave reviews from critics. You should definitely see it.
