It only took a quarter century, but a sequel to the 1991 cult classic The Rocketeer is officially in development.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is in the “early development stages” of a Rocketeer reboot titled The Rocketeers. The script is being written by Matt Spicer and Max Winkler, son of Henry Winkler of Happy Days fame.
The Rocketeers will take place six years after the original film and focus on a new pilot taking on the role of the Rocketeer after original hero, Cliff Secord, goes missing while fighting Nazis. The new protagonist will reportedly be a black female, who must “stop and ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist from stealing jetpack technology in what could prove to be a turning point in the Cold War.”
The 1991 film was based off of Dave Stevens’ comic book character of the same name and starred Billy Campbell, Timothy Dalton, and a young Jennifer Connelly. Disney has reportedly been looking to develop a reboot since 2012, but no official word has come from the studio until now.
