Disney is apparently looking to head back to the Grid and they want to bring a Joker along for the ride.
According to the Hollywood Reporter:
“The studio is in the very early stages of development for a new Tron movie, with Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto circling to star.”
After Tron: Legacy failed to set the world on fire back in 2010, Disney canceled a potential third installment in the sci-fi franchise in 2015, which makes this news rather surprising. Still, Legacy managed to clear $400 million worldwide, a decent enough return to warrant interest in a sequel, but Disney just couldn’t get one off the ground at the time.
Sources close to the new project not that this will not be a direct sequel to Legacy, but will be built out of the scrapped Tron 3 script. Leto is being looked at to play a character names Ares, who has not been featured in the franchise before. It’s unclear if Legacy stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, or Olivia Wilde will return.
Tron: Leto has no director or writer attached, and no proposed release date.
