With the recent box office success of Maleficent and Cinderella proving that there’s a sizable market for live-action remakes and spin-offs of their animated classics, Disney is looking to keep the ball rolling with a return to its Aladdin brand, as the studio has put a live-action prequel in the works.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the prequel will be called Genies and will focus on (you guessed it) the Genie from Aladdin and how he came to imprisoned in his lamp. While the film is still in the early stages of development and does not have a set release date, Disney is planning to have Genies lead into a future live-action Aladdin film.
The prospect of a Genie-centric story, especially in live-action, is admittedly intriguing, but it’s hard to see how a new Genie character could hope to live up to the late Robin Williams’ performance in the original Aladdin. Those are some tough shoes to fill.
