Did Serena Williams Just Accidentally Spoil ‘Avengers: Endgame’?

One of the most anticipated film sagas finally comes to a conclusion in April when Marvel Studios releases Avengers: Endgame, the ultimate finale to the Marvel Cinematic Universe story arc that began over a decade ago. There are plenty of rumors about which characters may or may not survive the final battle with Thanos (including whether those who were “snapped” in Infinity War might find a way to return). And now there’s a new log on the flaming rumor inferno, as tennis star Serena Williams may have let out a big secret during Sunday’s Academy Awards.

***Potential Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame beyond this point***

Williams, who is arguably the greatest female tennis player of all-time, posted a short video on Instagram on Sunday evening, with actor Chris Evans standing in the background. Evans, of course, plays Steve Rogers in the Marvel Universe, better known as superhero Captain America.

In the roughly 13-second video, Serena and a friend fawn over Evans at first, but then Serena lets this whooper of a potential spoiler fly.

“I was devastated that he died in that movie, Avengers.”

That was quickly followed by another voice saying something that sounds like “it’s a secret!”

Did Serena Williams just spoil Endgame? The clip was quickly deleted from her personal account, but it’s preserved here in this Chris Evans fan account:

Let’s analyze this for a second. For starters, it’s widely expected that this is Evans’ final movie playing Captain America, and he’s even posted his own goodbyes to the character on social media, when shooting for Endgame wrapped up a couple of months ago. Many fans already expect the character to somehow be killed off by the end of the movie.

On the other hand, does Serena hang out in the right circles to have seen Endgame a full two months before it hits theaters? Well, she’s a superstar athlete with millions of dollars and is married to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who has millions more of his own money. So it’s possible they have the kind of clout to find out about these kinds of things. They were, after all, invited to the Oscars without either of them really being a Hollywood figure (although Serena has appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, often in cameo appearances as herself).

Or (and this is the most likely answer in our minds) did she just forget which heroes Thanos turned to dust at the end of Infinity War? Plenty of big names dissolved into nothing when Thanos finally gained the power of all six Infinity Stones, so maybe Serena momentarily confused Chris Evans with Tom Holland or Benedict Cumberbatch. Or something like that. It could have just been an honest mistake.
