During his appearance on Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, former Bond and all-around likable Irishman Pierce Brosnan was confronted with a certain viral photograph and asked to explain himself.

The photo in question is the one Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds posted to Instagram back in January that featured himself, Brosnan, and Logan star Hugh Jackman. The image quickly prompted speculation that Brosnan would be playing Cable in Deadpool 2 (we’re certainly guilty of jumping to that conclusion) and Kimmel asked Brosnan point-blank if that was the case. “Are you going to play Cable in the next Deadpool movie?” the late night host asked. Brosnan’s response: “Not true.”

But Brosnan didn’t fully rule out the possibility.

“Nothing’s come my way yet, I mean,” the actor continued. “It was completely made up. We were sitting, waiting for a plane, the three of us. And the guys said, ‘Quick, let’s get a photograph!’ I jumped in the middle and Mr. Reynolds said, ‘Let’s do the three wise monkeys.’ He put it out there and it went viral.”

Kimmel went on to note that, because of Reynolds and Jackman’s friendship and all the rumors surrounding the possible connections between the Deadpool movies and Logan, it made sense that fans jumped onto the Brosnan-is-playing-Cable bandwagon, and suggested that Brosnan may be “lying to us.” Brosnan (of course) denied the allegation. “I ain’t lying,” he said. “I don’t lie. They know where to fine me. It’s just a fabrication.”

It looks like the hunt for Cable is far from over, as Brosnan is only one of many actors who have been linked to the role. Most recently, Michael Shannon was reported to be the frontrunner but so far, nothing has been confirmed. It sounds like Brosnan is game for the part if Reynolds and co. come a-knocking, but we’re guessing that the Cable casting rumors are going to be milked as long as possible. We have run two stories about the same photo, after all …
