Variety is reporting that Fox has officially found a new director for Deadpool 2.
John Wick co-director David Leitch has reached a deal with Fox to direct the film, after being the rumored frontrunner for the job ever since director Tim Miller’s departure back in late October. Leitch will reunite with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, as the two worked together previously on 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, with Reynolds being introduced as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Leitch serving as action director.
Tim Miller, who directed the first Deadpool, reportedly left the production over “creative differences” with Reynolds, who has considerable influence on the sequel’s creative direction. According to a report published by The Wrap not long after the news of Miller’s departure first came out, the two had very different visions for the sequel, with Miller apparently wanting to make a big budget superhero movie on par with the blockbusters put out by Marvel Studios, whereas Reynolds wanted to keep things in line with the tone of the first film. Presumably, Leitch will be much more willing to play ball with Reynolds and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick’s vision.
