Deadpool 2: Michael Shannon Is The New Frontrunner To Play Cable

Wait, what?

The Hollywood Reporter just dropped a piece of totally bizarre Deadpool 2 news today, revealing that none other than Michael Shannon is the frontrunner to play the much-coveted role of Cable in the film.

Here’s the news:

Michael Shannon has emerged as the frontrunner for the much-buzzed about Deadpool 2 role of Cable opposite Ryan Reynolds …

Sources say that Shannon isn’t the only one on the studio’s list but is the one leading the pack as the top choice at this stage.

You’ll recall that Shannon has made appearances in superhero movies before, as he played General Zod in 2013’s Man of Steel and reprised the role (albeit as a corpse with no lines of dialogue) in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Of course, those were DC movies, so there’s really no law that says Shannon can’t jump ship to Marvel, but this is still a piece of news I don’t think anyone was expecting.

THR also notes that David Leitch are still considering other actors for the job, such as Stranger Things‘ David Harbour, but that Shannon is the number one choice right now.

I know that everyone wants Ron Perlman to play Cable (he’s not going to) but now that Michael Shannon actually has a real shot at this, I hope he gets it. He’s a super talented actor who is never not interesting to watch, so I’m sure he could do something really cool with the role if given the chance.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
