Deadpool was one of this year’s most surprising smash hits, garnering largely positive critical reviews and earning $782 million worldwide, which is impressive considering the film only cost $58 million to make. Unsurprisingly, 20th Century Fox greenlit a sequel very quickly, with pretty much all of the original team back on board, including star Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller.
Unfortunately, there has been trouble behind-the-scenes on Deadpool 2, as Miller recently stepped down as director. While the exact reason for Miller’s departure has not been confirmed, reports have indicated artistic differences with Reynolds over what approach to take with the sequel are what prompted Miller to walk. With Miller gone, Fox has been quickly trying to find a replacement to keep their production schedule on track and while no one has been brought on board officially yet, sources close to the project claim that there is a frontrunner for the job.
According to Jeff Sneider, a seasoned movie news “scooper” for Mashable, David Leitch, who co-directed John Wick, is Fox’s first choice to direct Deadpool 2. Sneider’s sources report that although other filmmakers are being looked into, “by most accounts, 20th Century Fox has found its man.”
Deadpool 2 is scheduled for release January 12, 2018.
