It’s no secret that films based on DC Comics properties have not been having a good year. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice released in March and got hammered by negative reviews (including our own!) and Suicide Squad, which hits theaters later this week, isn’t faring much better.
Many have reacted to the overwhelmingly negative criticism these films have been receiving with a variation of “Oh, that sucks. Hope the next one is better,” which is the sensible reaction when a movie you were looking forward to turns out to be worse than it should have been. However, there is a subset of louder and indignant fans who have been accusing critics for months of being paid off by Marvel and other ridiculous conspiracy theories. Which brings us to their latest harebrained scheme to try and convince themselves that they’re right where so many others are wrong: petitioning to shut down review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Here’s the text from the petition on Change.org:
We need this site to be shut down because It’s Critics always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews, Like
1- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016
2- Suicide Squad 2016
and that Affects people’s opinion even if it’s a really great movies
Nevermind that this petition shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how Rotten Tomatoes works or that Warner Bros, the studio behind both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, owned a 30% stake in RT before selling it to Fandango in February. No, everything is just a top-down conspiracy against DC movies.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go find something to spend all this Marvel endorsement money on.
