Update: Charlie Sheen confirmed recent rumors that is HIV positive this morning in an interview with The Today Show‘s Matt Lauer.

“I’m here to admit that I’m in fact HIV positive,” said Sheen. “I have to stop this onslaught of attacks and sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories about the threatening the health of so many others which couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Sheen went on to reveal that he was first diagnosed four years ago after repeated severe headaches and night sweats. “I thought I had a brain tumor, thought it was over,” Sheen said. After a series of tests, he was told of his condition. “It’s a hard three letters to absorb; its’ a turning point in one’s life,” Sheen told Lauer.

In a bid to keep his diagnosis private, Sheen admitted that he tried to pay off a number of people to stay quiet. “I have paid those people. Not that many, but enough,” he said, when asked how many and how much. “I don’t want to guess wrong, but enough to bring it into the millions. What people forget: that’s money they’re taking from my children. I’ve got five kids and a granddaughter.”

The actor claims that he hasn’t infected anyone.

Original Story: In a New York Post blind item last week, it was reported that an unnamed Hollywood A-list actor known for his philandering has been HIV positive, with a list of exes including, “an award-winning actress, a religious movie star, and a top Hollywood personality with a controversial past,” among others. Obviously, many assumed the actor was Charlie Sheen (although that “A-list” identifier is somewhat suspect), and now it looks like that speculation may have been onto something.

The Today Show announced this morning that Charlie Sheen will be appearing live on Tuesday for a “revealing personal announcement.” Many expect that announcement to be confirmation that he is HIV positive. In the original New York Post article, it is claimed that the actor in quesiton is, “distraught about the possibility of the illness becoming a defining quality of his career.”

We guess we’ll know for sure tomorrow.
