‘Captain America: Civil War’ Writers Reveal Why They Cut An Important Fight Scene

Captain America: Civil War pairs off pretty much all of its heroes in one way or another in the film’s giant fight scene; Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) fight Spider-Man (Tom Holland), War Machine (Don Cheadle) Takes on Hawkeye (Jeremy Rennder) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) fights pretty much everyone … but there’s one omission that you may not have noticed: a duel between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johanson).

As it turns out, the film’s writers didn’t forget about pairing off this duo, as they actually wrote a fight scene for the two characters; they were just forced to omit it from the final cut.

“There was a good fight between Captain America and Black Widow that we lost mainly due to time,” co-writer Christopher Markus recently told Fandango.

“[Cap and Black Widow] clearly have a deep relationship even though they’re clearly on opposite sides, and you never know how many times you need to hit that over the course of the movie,” adds co-writer Stephen McFeely. “I think it works without this fight, but we certainly didn’t know if it would.”

The fact that Civil War splits up Cap and Black Widow came as a bit of a shock, considering how closely allied they were in the previous Captain America film, The Winter Soldier. Keeping their conflict strictly verbal may have ended up being the best decision, as the film leaves their friendship in a neutral place and this could have ended up being much worse if they had actually fought each other.

Still, we have to wonder: who would have won the fight between Captain America and Black Widow?

“I guess Cap did,” McFeely said. “Let’s just say he got away in the moment, how about that?”
