While Captain America: Civil War’s cast isn’t quite as large of that of the Avengers films, it still features a sizable portion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s characters, including some who haven’t been seen in quite awhile such as Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt). We know that big names like Thor and the Hulk are sitting this one out, but another important character who has made appearances in multiple films also won’t be present for the big Cap/Iron Man showdown.
As reported by The Wrap, Gwyneth Paltrow will not reprise her role as Pepper Potts in Civil War. Although there were rumors a few months ago that Paltrow was involved with reshoots, this new report claims that she was never actually asked to return.
The report also notes that Potts’s absence will be explained away by her having broken up with Tony Stark prior to the film’s events. If true, it looks like quite a bit has changed for Stark following the events of Age of Ultron, as Tony made note of still being with Pepper in that film. Paltrow is also quite busy these days with her lifestyle brand Goop, so it’s hardly surprising that she won’t be showing up in what would likely only be a minor role anyway.
Seeing as how there are currently no plans for an Iron Man 4 anytime soon, hopefully we’ll get to see Pepper at some point in Phase Three (the likeliest scenario is that she pops up in one of the Avengers: Infinity War installments). On the bright side, at least her absence in Captain America: Civil War won’t be too strongly felt, as the film contains more than enough characters and conflicts to keep viewers entertained as it is.
