Brie Larson Responds To Trolls Complaining That Captain Marvel Should ‘Smile More’

In addition to punching an old lady in the face, one of the big talking points to come out of the Captain Marvel trailer debut earlier this week is something much less fun and all too familiar to women everywhere:

“Smile more.”

Those two words have become shorthand for a particularly insidious form of sexual harassment and although she’s the most powerful superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even Captain Marvel isn’t immune from it. Unsurprisingly, a common troll complaint leveled at the trailer is that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers doesn’t smile enough in it (because this is the kind of thing we think about when it comes to male heroes like Captain America, right?). Larson herself has seen the complaints and responded by posting Photoshopped posters (originally posted on Twitter by Jane Ritt) of various male MCU heroes sporting grins. The results were off-putting, to say the least:

“Breaking news: You can be you,” Larson also wrote on Instagram. “”That means you can smile or not. You can be strong in the ways you want to be. You can own who you are. If anyone tells you different don’t trust them.”

Captain Marvel opens on March 9, 2019. Bold prediction: there will be scenes with smiles and scenes without. And old lady punching, of course!
