In case you didn’t know, Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario) is directing a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 science-fiction classic Blade Runner. Most of us have just been calling it ‘Blade Runner 2’ and grumbled about how it can’t possibly live up to the original, but at least now we know what to call the thing.

Villeneuve’s film will be titled Blade Runner 2049. Ostensibly, the film takes place in the year 2049, which would mean it’s set 30 years after the events of the first film. In addition to the title reveal, Alcon Entertainment has also hared a photo from the set that features Denis Villenueve, Ridley Scott, Harrison Ford, and Ryan Gosling. That’s almost too much talent for one room to handle.

Blade Runner 2 Set

So far, we know very little about Blade Runner 2049 other than who’s involved: Scott is serving as producer this time out and the film will see the return of Harrison Ford in the role of Rick Deckard. The film will also co-star Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, and Lennie James.

Villeneuve has already claimed that is “not possible to live up to the original,” and while that very well may be true, anyone who has seen Villeneuve’s films knows that he is a talent to be reckoned with, so if there has to be a Blade Runner sequel, he has one of the best shots at making it something special.
