Hands up if you are familiar with any of Aquaman’s biggest foes. Okay, not too many of you. Not a big surprise.
Aquaman always seems to get the short end of the stick when it comes to the Justice League heroes. He’s not as cool as Batman, not invincible like Superman, and his super powers — well, they kind of suck. His bad guys are even less memorable, but the only one that most people can even name is Black Manta. So it’s no surprise that The Wrap is reporting that Black Manta will be the main villain in the upcoming Aquaman film, part of the expanded DC Movie Universe. Warner Bros. has not commented on the report and there is no word on who might play Manta.
Black Manta is one of Aquaman’s oldest foes, first appearing in the comics in 1967. He has had multiple origin stories and his super powers stem for a combination of an experimental serum from his youth and his armored suit.
Aquaman stars Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones) as the title character, but the movie isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until 2018. Momoa will introduce the character before that in the Justice League movie that is scheduled to hit theaters in November 2017.
