Ben Affleck may have his first big directorial failure on his hands, as his new film Live by Night has struggled out of the gate.
The new gangster filim, which stars Affleck and Zoe Saldana, didn’t even crack the top 10 highest-grossing films for the weekend, opening in eleventh place with less than $6 million earned domestically. With a reported budget of $65 million, Affleck’s film has a long way to go before reaching profitability.
Elsewhere, Live by Night wasn’t the only only new film to underwhelm at the box office, as Martin Scorsese’s Silence earned a mere $1.9 million over the weekend and is now on track to be one of the lowest-earning films of Scorsese’s career. Its only real hope is that it gets some Oscar buzz when the Academy Award nominations are announced later this month.
Rounding out the trifecta of failure was Chris Wedge’s new action film Monster Trucks, which earned $10.5 million over the weekend and another $14.7 million overseas. However, with a large budget of $125 million, Monster Trucks will have a difficult time rallying to profitability, if it does at all.
Here are the top 10 earners for the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo:
1. Hidden Figures $20.5 million
2. La La Land $14.5 million
3. Sing $13.8 million
4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story $13.8 million
5. The Bye Bye Man $13.4 million
6. Patriots Day $12 million
7. Monster Trucks $10.5 million
8. Sleepless $8.5 million
9. Underworld: Blood Wars $5.8 million
10. Passengers $5.6 million
