While it’s been rumored for awhile that Ben Affleck would direct the next standalone Batman film, it’s been unclear whether he would be able to take the job, considering he’s currently attached to direct an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel Live By Night. It seems that the Academy Award-winner will find time to fit Batman into his busy schedule after all, as Deadline confirmed that Affleck would not only direct the next Batman film, but also serve as a co-writer with DC’s chief creative officer and all-around comics legend Geoff Johns.

This is pretty big news for DC’s fledgling film universe. Say what you will about Ben Affleck as an actor, but the man has proven himself to be a talented director, and the fact that he’s including a Batman film in his upcoming projects shows that he is committed whole-heatedly to his role as the Caped Crusader.

It’s unclear when Affleck’s Batman film can be expected to hit theaters, but it won’t be any earlier than 2018, as it will be set after the events of the Justice League film, which doesn’t come out until November 17, 2017. There’s also the small matter of Affleck having to finish his work on Live By Night first before he can even start thinking about creating the first new solo Batman film since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
