Yesterday, THR reported that a source within Warner Bros. had come to them with a story that the studio was actively looking to transition Ben Affleck out of the role of Batman in its slate of DC movies. With Affleck stepping down as director of The Batman earlier this year and new director Matt Reeves coming on and scrapping the script Affleck had co-wrote, it certainly seemed within the realm of possibility that the actor was ready to walk, so we reported the story.
Fortunately, it didn’t take long for Affleck to address the rumor. The Justice League star spoke during a DC panel at San Diego Comic-Con earlier today and made assurances to those in attendance that he doesn’t plan on going anywhere.
“Let me be clear. Batman is the coolest f—ing part in any universe. I’m so thrilled to do it. I’m not going anywhere.” He acknowledged that his departure as director might have led fans to believe he was stepping away from The Batman altogether, but he said he’s so glad Matt Reeves has taken over the helm. “I would be a f—ng ape on the ground for Matt Reeves, so obviously I’m going to be Batman for him.”
Personally, I’m thrilled Affleck is staying on and that it sounds like he’s fully on-board with Reeves’ vision for The Batman. It would be a shame if DC had to delay that movie any further with a search for a new Batman, so hopefully we can look forward to many years of the same actor playing the Dark Knight!
