8 Reasons Why Kylo Ren Might Actually Be Luke Skywalker

[Editor’s Note: This article was obviously written before ‘The Force Awakens’ was released. We now know the true identity of Kylo Ren, but feel free to read our baseless speculation from 2015!]

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new Star Wars movie coming out this month featuring the return of the original cast. But with each new trailer and movie poster that gets released, a growing mystery seems to be gripping the internet — where the hell is Luke Skywalker?

Thus far, the promotional material has revealed very little. All we know is that Kylo Ren is a mysterious Sith-looking character with a fancy looking lightsaber. Could it be that he’s actually the dark side version of Luke Skywalker, still on a quest to bring balance to the force after the rebels’ decisive victory in Return of the Jedi? Read on and see if you’re persuaded by this crazy (but convincing) argument.

8. Luke Once Turned to the Dark Side in the Expanded Universe

Lucasfilm has officially stated that all previously released Expanded Universe works would be re-branded under the new Star Wars Legends banner and considered non-canon but back in 1991, Dark Horse Comics published a series of Star Wars comics called Dark Empire. In it, Luke falls to the dark side and helps a cloned version of the Emperor chase Leia across the galaxy in an attempt to steal the mysterious Jedi Holocron, an artifact so powerful it could give its possessor absolute control of the Force. It became one of their best selling Star Wars comic arcs and also featured the return of Boba Fett, another absent character many fans are speculating will make a comeback in the new movie. Although the new film isn’t beholden to old Expanded Universe storylines, there’s still a possibility the plot for The Force Awakens will have something to do with Luke being drawn away from the light side, requiring his friends to go and bring him back.

7. Mark Hamill Always Thought Luke Would Go Bad

Dinner for Five is a round table discussion group featuring various celebrities who eat, drink, and swap stories about projects past and present. Mark Hamill was a guest on the show in 2005 and, over the course of discussion, he revealed that he always saw Luke turning to the dark side and threatening to destroy all hope before being redeemed. He envisioned dark side Luke as a wandering renegade samurai with a shaved head and ponytail who had been absent for years. Needless to say Lucas didn’t go for it at the time, but now that JJ Abrams is at the helm, perhaps Hamill’s words will hold more sway.

Skip to the 12:00 mark to hear Hamill talk about the pitch.

6. JJ Abrams Loves to Hide The Roles of Famous Actors in His Movies

While a quick visit to the movie’s IMDB page will reveal that Adam Driver is the actor playing Kylo Ren, fans just aren’t buying it quite yet. Director JJ Abrams is famous for putting out misleading information to throw fans off the scent of what he’s got hidden up his sleeve. Remember the great lengths he went to in order to keep fans from knowing Khan was being played by Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Trek: Into Darkness? Or the twist he put on Ben Kingsley and The Mandarin in Iron Man 3? With that in mind, Kylo Ren could easily be Luke Skywalker in disguise considering how little we actually know about him.

5. Luke/Kylo Could Be On A Quest To Bring Balance to the Force

In one of the trailers Kylo Ren says “I will finish what you started” while staring down at Darth Vader’s mask. Vader’s original goal as Anakin Skywalker was to bring balance to the force. He failed when the Sith decimated the Jedi at the end of Revenge of the Sith, just as Luke failed to bring balance when the last of the Sith were apparently destroyed at the end of Return of the Jedi.

It has been stated by JJ Abrams that “Kylo Ren is totally not a Sith.” So if Ren isn’t a Sith, then just what exactly is his end game? If he’s looking to finish what Vader started, maybe he (as in Luke) is legitimately trying to bring balance to the Force.

4. Mark Hamill Has Been Buffing Up

Mark Hamill has stated in interviews that he was required to grow a beard and to work out with a personal trainer to get in shape for his returning role as Luke Skywalker. If his part in the movie was only a small cameo, why would he need to put in so much time with a personal trainer? So he can also play one of the film’s villains, that’s why!

3. Kylo Ren’s Voice Sounds Robotic and Fake

When you hear Kylo Ren’s voice for a brief moment in the trailer, it sounds heavily modulated and a little reminiscent of Vader’s. Now that we all know Vader’s headgear gave Hayden Christensen the voice of James Earl Jones, it seems more than believable that the voice from the trailers could actually be Luke Skywalker’s. And if Luke is undercover in disguise, of course he would want to change his voice to help hide his identity.

2. The Cloak

The last time we saw Luke in Return of the Jedi, his fashion sense had already gone to the ‘dark’ side as he was dressed all in black, including a black cloak that looks almost identical to the one Kylo Ren is seen wearing in the Force Awakens trailers. In addition, as Anakin progressed in his mastery over the Force and his eventual awakening to the dark side, his outfits gradually incorporated darker colors. Maybe Luke’s attire is also symbolic of his fall to the dark side.

1. Luke Skywalker is the Only Character Left Who Can Build a Lightsaber

Kylo Ren’s new hilted lightsaber practically blew up the internet when it was revealed in the film’s first trailer. While it might turn out to be merely a found Sith relic from the past, the fact that there’s never been a lightsaber like it before leads us to believe that it’s a new custom job. The thing is, by the end of Return of the Jedi, the only known character still alive who knows how to construct a lightsaber is Luke Skywalker. So either Luke made a special lightsaber for Kylo or. . . Luke is Kylo!
