Most viral internet sensations happen by accident. It’s incredibly difficult to manufacture something to go viral because a lot of the appeal seems to stem from the fluke nature of the event which always seems to be captured and shared by someone in the right place at the right time. Now Hollywood, always eager to cash in on the success of what’s trending, has begun trying to capitalize on the success of some these viral crazes by turning them into feature length films. Here are six movies that would never have been made if it weren’t for something that went viral on the internet.
6. That Awkward Moment
Rather than being based on a viral internet video or picture, the movie That Awkward Moment derives its name from a popular hashtag often used as a preface when sharing stories about socially uncomfortable situations on Twitter and other social networking sites. Hollywood immediately jumped on the trend and rolled it into a mediocre comedy starring Zac Efron. It actually turned out to be quite a success at the box office — perhaps due in no small part to Efron’s horde of followers on social media with whom he engaged with on regular basis leading up to the release of the movie.
