To say that Deadpool’s first live-action appearance in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a disappointment would be the understatement of a lifetime. A more accurate generalized opinion would be to say that people thought it was utter blasphemy. Not only does the film discount Deadpool’s history with cancer, it makes the reprehensible blunder of sewing the wisecracking mercenary’s mouth shut—effectively ensuring that the character’s portrayal wouldn’t be a comedic one.
The good news is that 20th Century Fox is finally making amends for its past atrocity. After years of being stuck in development hell with studio executives unwilling to take a chance on a lesser-known comic book property, Deadpool is now set to hit theaters on February 12 and we’re getting pretty excited to see what the studio has in store for everyone’s favorite unhinged antihero. With good reason too. Based on what we’ve seen in the trailers and heard from interviews, it looks and sounds like the film is going to be quite the fun ride. Here are a few things you can expect from Marvel’s new R-rated action-comedy.
10. It Will Be True to the Source Material
Everyone involved was very passionate about the project and word is they made every effort to stay as close to the original Deadpool comic universe as possible. Fox admits that they only decided to green-light the movie after seeing fan’s reaction to the leaked test footage over social media. Consequently, they feel they owe it to them to give them the best, most authentic Deadpool movie possible. The production designers were really devoted to getting the Deadpool costume right, which included the iconic white eyes on his mask. To pull off the look, they filmed Ryan Reynolds doing everything without the mask, and then they added CGI animation to the shots with the mask to allow the mask to move and portray various expressions like it does in the comics.
