When they are on the big (or small) screen, the incredible talents of actors and actresses are on full display. Their ability to hit their lines with the perfect tone and express emotions are why they get paid the big bucks. But while acting is how they pay the bills and why they are famous, many of our most popular entertainers actually have other amazing talents too
Some of Hollywood’s most famous stars have hidden talents that very few people actually know about. These talents range from skateboarding to martial arts, and even to even flying planes! This article will look at 10 big name celebs in particular who have wonderful talents away from their primary profession.
10. Kate Beckinsale
Kate Beckinsale is a talented actress that is best known for her roles in the Underworld series and alongside Hugh Jackman in Van Helsing. She has been acting since she was a student at Oxford and has been extremely successful in Hollywood. However, in addition to her obvious talents as an actress, Beckinsale is also quite the writer.
Her poems and short stories have won awards, including the British WH Smith Literary Award two years in a row. In addition to her writing skills, she has also mastered a number of languages and has to be among the smartest people in Hollywood.
9. Harrison Ford
Harrison Ford is without a doubt one of the most famous actors on the planet, as he has played staring roles in huge movie franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. His career has spanned six different decades and he has proven his acting talents are out of this world. But what if we told you acting wasn’t even the coolest thing he does?
Well it’s true, as that distinction would go to flying planes. Ford is a licensed pilot and owns many different aircraft. He keeps them at an airport in Santa Monica. He also owns property in Wyoming and has even been called on by local authorities to help with rescue and emergency missions in the past. Unfortunately, things aren’t always smooth when Ford is in the air. He’s been involved in two minor crashes so far, including one that resulted in a broken pelvis and ankle.
8. Christopher Walken
Christopher Walken has been working in the acting industry since the 1950s and has one of the longest careers of any actor in Hollywood. Throughout his storied career, Walken has appeared in well over 100 TV shows and movies, playing some very memorable (and often weird) roles.
But many decades ago, while he was still very new in the entertainment industry, Walken actually used to tame lions. Walken did a routine with a lion named Sheba and claimed that she was just like a big, old dog. This is an extremely rare and especially cool talent. And yet it somehow seems to be perfectly fit with the quirky personality of Walken.
7. Pierce Brosnan
Pierce Brosnan has been a major movie star since the late 1970s, but in the mid-90s he would get the role that would turn him into a superstar. Brosnan was cast to play James Bond in 1994 and he would go on to appear as the iconic British spy in four different films over the next decade or so. He has done a lot of other film and TV work and is still active to this day.
Before he became the star actor he is today, Brosnan had another (much scarier) talent. He was a fire eater for many years and even joined a circus at one point! While we doubt he does much fire eating now, that is a pretty amazing talent to have in your back pocket.
6. Jason Lee
Jason Lee is best known for his role as Earl in the hit TV show My Name is Earl. On top of that, he has acted and voiced many character in both television and film. However, if you are into skateboarding and the history behind it, you likely know Lee best as an absolute legend when it comes to skateboarding.
Lee is credited with creating the 360 flip and was actually a pro skater in the 1980s and early 90s. He owns Stereo Skateboards (a company that creates decks) and is still heavily involved in the industry today. Who knows — if Lee would have continued to skate instead of becoming an actor, he could have become world-famous for a whole other reason than his skills as an actor. Maybe we’d have Jason Lee’s Pro Skater instead of the Tony Hawk games.
5. Taylor Lautner
Taylor Lautner has been an actor since he was 11 years old, but really burst onto the scene in Hollywood when he secured the role of Jacob in the Twilight movie franchise. He became a Tiger Beat teen icon after that and gathered millions and millions of (mostly female) fans.
While he hasn’t been able to capture those same levels of fame since, he has still continued to work in Hollywood and has a bright future in front of him. He’s only in his mid-20s, after all. In addition to being an actor, Lautner is also an accomplished martial artist and took his first karate class at just six-years-old. Since then, he has become a black belt and still trains in his spare time.
4. Colin Farrell
Colin Farrell has been a successful actor in Hollywood for years and seems capable of playing a role in almost any genre of film. Whether it is comedy, action, thriller, drama, or something else, Farrell is on top of his game. He is a very talented actor, but most people don’t realize he is also an incredible dancer.
In particular, Farrell is a very talented country line dancer if you believe it. He took some classes when he came to America. He very quickly became so talented at the dance that he was able to actually start teaching classes himself — until his acting career took off, that is.
3. Geena Davis
Geena Davis is an actress who has been acting in TV and film for over 30 years now and is probably best known for starring in Thelma and Louise, A League of Their Own, Stuart Little, and many others. While being a star actress is already a huge accomplishment, it wasn’t enough for Davis.
She took up the sport of archery in 1997, and in 1999, she was one of 300 women trying for a spot on the U.S Women’s Olympic team for the Sydney 2000 games. She placed 24th, and while that wasn’t good enough to qualify for a spot on the team, it’s still pretty impressive for someone relatively new to the sport. She is also a member of Mensa, putting her in the top two percent in terms of intelligence, which is pretty impressive as well.
2. Steve Martin
Steve Martin has been making audiences laugh for decades as one of the best comedic actors of his generation. He has done it all as an entertainer. While most would know him for his roles in Cheaper by the Dozen and Pink Panther, older people might fondly remember him for his influential stand-up routine.
In addition to acting and his stand-up work, Martin is also an incredibly talented banjo player. He has been playing since he was a child and has been incredibly successful over the years. He is so talented that he actually won a Grammy for a bluegrass album he released in 2009. He can also play the piano, which isn’t quite as cool as the banjo, but still pretty damn impressive. He is a man of many talents, there is no doubt about that.
1. Neil Patrick Harris
NPH is one of the most beloved actors in the world today and is best known for his TV roles which include Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother and Dr. Doogie Howser in Doogie Howser, M.D. That’s not even counting memorable movie roles like Starship Troopers, Gone Girl, and the Harold and Kumar series. He is a very influential and successful man in entertainment and will continue to be a huge star for years to come.
In addition to acting, Neil Patrick Harris is also an accomplished magician (often working it into some of acting roles). He has been practicing it for many years and even won the prestigious Tannen’s Magic Louis Award in 2006. In 2008, he hosted the World Magic Award show, which actually sounds more fun than his job hosting the Tony, Emmy, or the Acadamy Awards (he’s done all three).
