The ridiculously huge and long-running MMO World of Warcraft had seen a significant decline in subscribers in recent years, and while it likely will never reach the highs of 11 million subscribers it hit during its peak, it looks like the latest expansion, Legion, has done a lot to reverse the downward trend. BusinessWire is reporting that the expansion, which released on August 30th, sold 3.3 million units on launch day, matching the record of previous WoW expansions, and becoming one of the fastest-selling PC games in history in the process. It also says that WoW’s active player base for the first week of release reached the highest number since the debut of the Cataclysm expansion in 2010. This is all good news for Blizzard and fans of WoW, as some had feared that a poor performance by Legion could have potentially hastened the demise of the popular game.

It’s still a long road ahead, as Blizzard must now maintain that player base through regular content updates, something which many feel they dropped the ball on for the previous expansion, Warlords of Draenor, but it’s definitely a promising start for the newest phase of World of Warcraft.
