Why Ian McKellen Turned Down $1.5M To Officiate A Wedding As Gandalf

Sir Ian McKellen, the beloved thespian who is just as comfortable playing Macbeth as he is a Marvel Comics villain, wants you to know that he doesn’t take take requests to officiate weddings … at least if that request involves donning the guise of Gandalf the wizard from The Lord of the Rings.

In a recent interview with The Daily Mail, the 77-year-old actor revealed that he turned Napster founder Sean Parker’s request to officiate his wedding back in 2013. Parker reportedly offered McKellen $1.5 million for the gig, but on the condition that McKellen do so while playing Gandalf (McKellen doesn’t indicate whether Parker requested Gandalf the Grey or White). According to McKellen, he may have considered the offer if it wasn’t for the Gandalf part.

“I said, ‘I am sorry, Gandalf doesn’t do weddings,'” McKellen told reporters, to the disappointment of million of fans worldwide who may have thought they could get Gandalf to oversee their nuptials. Despite not securing the services of a member of the Istari order, Parker’s 2013 wedding still managed to be the obnoxious affair, as it’s reported that the Big Sur, California festivities did some potential damage to the redwood forest it was held in.

We’re sure Gandalf would have a nice derisive chuckle over that part …
