Will we ever see a PlayStation 6? If new comments made by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot are any indication, if we do ever see a PS6, it will be as part of “new types of consoles” that differ greatly from traditional consoles.

In an earnings call yesterday, Guillemot argued that consoles will likely move to a streaming-based service in the future, but not before we see at least one new cycle of traditional gaming machines. “Now on the console side, we expect there will be new consoles that are going to make this market continue to grow and we feel it’s … we’ll still have another generation of consoles before we have new types of consoles coming to the market.”

While confident that streaming is the future, Guillemot did admit that the time isn’t quite right yet. “We believe in streaming—it demands lots of bandwidth. We think it’s going to grow but today, with the types of games we have, it will still take a bit of time to be more popular.”

Guillemot was also asked about his opinions on the PS4.5 or PS4 NEO, an upgraded PlayStation 4 model that Sony is rumored to be releasing sometime later this year, but he only reiterated his belief that another full console generation will emerge before we see significant changes in the market.

“For the new consoles, there’s nothing official on that so my expectation is we will have another cycle of consoles before we go to streaming,” he said. “I don’t have dates or anything but what I see is the manufacturers would prefer to have again a new hardware to take up the potential of new possibilities that they can bring.”

Guillemot isn’t the first gaming executive to make comments about a streaming future for the industry, as even PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida has stated that, despite the PS4 being one of the fastest-selling consoles of all time. he isn’t sure if there will be a PS5,
