The NPD Group’s monthly report on console sales has declared the Xbox One the overall champion for August.
Thanks in large part to the launch of the slimmer and sleeker Xbox One S, Microsoft’s Xbox division was able to outsell Sony’s PlayStation 4 for the second month in a row, although exact sales numbers have yet to be released. This is a noteworthy accomplishment when you consider that the Xbox One has outperformed the PS4 less than ten times in total over the 33 month period since both consoles launched back in November 2013.
Perhaps emboldened by their recent sales success, Microsoft also took a sly jab at Sony’s unveiling of the PS4 Pro on Wednesday, noting that the Xbox One is the only console available this holiday with built-in 4K Blu-ray support (the PS4 Pro lacks this functionality), as well as touting the Xbox One S’s 4K video streaming capabilities and its lower price point of $299.

Of course, it’s important to note that the Xbox One probably wasn’t the best-selling console for August overall, as Microsoft’s claim back in July only took into account 8th generation consoles such as the Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U, leaving out Nintendo’s 3DS, which actually outsold the Xbox One.
It will be interesting to see if Microsoft will be able to hold onto its sales lead heading into the holiday season or if Sony will be able to recapture the top spot with the release of their PS4 Slim this month and the PS4 Pro in November.
