Other than Telltale’s point and click adventure series, video games based on The Walking Dead have been, well, pretty much garbage.
There was a first person shooter called The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct that was universally panned by critics and ignored by gamers. Multiple mobile games, with subtitles like No Man’s Land and Assault, are typical free-to-play games, with mountains of microtransactions available to make things easier. There’s even an endless zombie runner branded with the Fear the Walking Dead spinoff show, but the less said about either of those two things, the better.
Now a new video game will attempt to match the success of the wildly popular AMC series, with one small catch — it’s an arcade game. Yeah, remember arcades? Those places filled with obnoxious teenagers and bright lights that sucked quarters out of your pockets at an alarming rate? Yeah, it’s an arcade game.
Simply titled The Walking Dead, the new game looks to be in the some mold as previous successful arcade shooters like House of the Dead. It features a lifelike crossbow weapon to fire at the screen and the whole thing is contained in a little booth, to create a better gaming atmosphere.
Expect to see the game popping up in your closest arcade starting in Janurary 2017.
