In what will almost certainly be the final major LAN tournament before direct invites are announced for the upcoming Shanghai Major, and with a meta-changing patch expected very shortly, The Summit 4 was a last chance for some pro teams to lay claim to deserving an invitation to China. And in a Grand Final that went from a stunning near-upset to a legendary comeback, defending TI5 Champions Evil Geniuses roared back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat CIS mainstays Virtus.Pro 3-2 and become the first team to win two Summit events, walking away with nearly $50,000 for winning.
Virtus.Pro was the surprise of The Summit 4, having just replaced their long-time carry player during the transfer period before rosters were locked for any team wanting to be eligible for Shanghai invites. After dropping to the Lower Bracket in the first round of the playoffs, VP ran over heavily favored teams to make it to the Grand Finals, defeating surging European squad Team Liquid, TI4 runners-up Vici Gaming, and Frankfurt Major winner Team OG, then putting EG on the ropes early by winning the first two games of the final Best-of-Five. Unfortunately, VP could not finish the job, but stlll laid claim to being one of the top teams in the CIS region, which could factor heavily when invites for the Major are decided.
