Nintendo is currently suffering from a self-inflicted release drought for the rest of 2015, as major Wii U titles like Star Fox Zero and The Legend of Zelda for Wii U have been pushed to 2016. If a discovery made on the Wii U eShop turns out to be true however, Nintendo fans desperate to play anything might be enjoying an HD remaster of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in the near future.
A listing for a Japanese version of the title was discovered on Nintendo’s update servers by hackers recently, only a day after an icon with more than a passing resemblance to Twilight Princess artwork was discovered on Nintendo’s network.
Considering that Nintendo is no stranger to HD remasters of Zelda titles, having released Wind Waker HD for the Wii U back in 2013, and the fact that Nintendo has stated in the past that they toyed with making HD versions of both Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, there is some merit to these rumors. Plus, Nintendo really needs to release anything at this point if they hope to sell any more Wii Us before they kill the console completely (come on, you know it doesn’t have much time left).
Twilight Princess was a beautiful game in its own right when it was released in 2006 for the Gamecube and Wii, but it was held back by Nintendo’s refusal to adopt high definition in their consoles. The game would likely benefit greatly from a remaster, especially if Nintendo ditches those awful motion controls and ports the Gamecube version. It was definitely the better of the two.
