Fumito Ueda, famed creator of Ico, Shadow Of The Colossus, and The Last Guardian has confirmed to the Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu he’s hard at work on a new game. The game doesn’t sound as though it has ties to any of his previous efforts but in the article translated by Gematsu, he stated that “What we’re making now doesn’t feel like an indie game. We’re ultimately aiming for something on the scale of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.”
It’s clear that the game is in its infancy as Ueda goes on to say, “We’re in a stage of various trials. This stage we’re in, where we’re actually making our ideas to test if they’re interesting or not, is being supported by Kowloon Nights (a game fund), so we’re proceeding with prototyping.” Ueda left Sony several years ago and it appears that his latest game will be at least partially crowdfunded and not created in conjunction with Sony.
Ueda is now the head his own studio called genDesign, with Team Ico effectively having been disbanded and gone separate ways. He finished the chronically delayed, The Last Guardian as a freelancer as we haven’t heard much from him since. Ueda seems to be taking the wait and see approach with this product, “If larger-scale development becomes of interest to us, then I think we will significantly expand our development system and take it to a large-scale development team to make it a big game.”
However, the game’s development plays out were looking forward to seeing what Ueda and his team have in store, we just hope that that the project doesn’t take as long as The Last Guardian.
