It hasn’t even been two weeks since Marvel’s Spider-Man launched on PS4 to rave reviews, but the chances of getting a sequel already look very good. Developer Insomniac Games packed a lot of different characters and stories into the game, but wisely held some things back for a potential follow-up. The biggest omission — especially in light of the upcoming movie — is arguably Venom and anything having to do with Spider-Man’s symbiote suit, which disappointingly is not among the game’s many unlockable Spidey suits. While it’s admittedly a bummer to not get to use the black suit in the game, its absence can be attributed to Insomniac’s larger plan for the franchise.
Speaking with Kinda Funny Games in an all-out spoilercast on the game (seriously, don’t listen to it unless you’ve completed Spider-Man’s story), Insomniac’s Creative Director Bryan Intihar discussed why the symbiote suit wasn’t in the game, stating that he wants to do the story behind the suit justice:
“I think something like that suit deserves its day in the spotlight. I think just making it an unlockable suit wouldn’t be doing it justice. It’s one of the best stories for Spider-Man. I think it’s a complex story. And I think it’s a story that needs to be told, and it needs to be told the way Insomniac would tell it.”
That story, of course, originated in the 1984 Marvel Comics event “Secret Wars”, which saw Peter Parker serving as the host of the black symbiote substance before he rid himself of it, only for it to find Eddie Brock and create one of Spider-Man’s most iconic villains, Venom.
