Sony Is Working On PS2 Backwards Compatibility For PlayStation 4

Well, it’s not on the same level of Xbox One playing Xbox 360 games, but it’s a start.

Sony has announced that they will be bringing PS2 emulation to the PlayStation 4, which would make PlayStation 2 games playable on the console.

“We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,” said a Sony Computer Entertainment of America representative in a statement to Polygon.

There is currently no timetable on when PS2 games will start being sold on the PlayStation Store or when full emulation will be implemented, but right now it sounds like you can just go ahead and pop in some PS2 games to see if they work.

There are already some PS2 games that can run on PS4, as the Star Wars Battlefront bundle that came out this week (read our review of the game here) included a few older Star Wars PS2 titles — Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter — and as many players discovered, these were the actual PS2 editions. The games run on the PS4 as if it was a PS2.

While this isn’t exactly a system-selling feature by any means, it will still be nice to have the option. Now if only Sony can figure out a way to get PS3 emulation working and we’d be golden.
