After months of rumors and speculation that Sony was working on a new, more powerful version of the PlayStation 4, the company has finally confirmed that those rumors are in fact true.

Andrew House, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, confirmed the reports to the Financial Times, revealing that the “high-end” PS4 — thought to be codenamed “Neo” — will be more expensive than the current model, which retails for $350 USD. He also added that it’s not a replacement for the current model, but rather is designed to “sit alongside and complement” the standard PS4.

“We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle,” House said.

House claims that the new system was specifically designed with hardcore gamers in mind, as he confirmed that the ‘Neo’ will support 4K TV sets. The new model will also provide users who purchase the PlayStation VR headset with a smoother experience. PSVR is expected to launch later this year.

One of the main concerns with the PS4 NEO is that it would force developers to essentially create two versions of every game — one for the standard unit and one for the high-end model — but House downplayed those fears.

“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” he said.

Shockingly, House also confirmed that Sony will not be showing the new model at next week’s E3 even in Los Angeles. He insisted that they want to make sure they have enough games and experiences to show off before they unveil it.

House did not reveal the new console’s price or when it is expected to ship, although previous rumors have pegged the price at the $399 mark.
