Rockstar officially announced yesterday that a sequel to the critically-acclaimed Western game Red Dead Redemption will arrive in fall 2017 and naturally, fans have been speculating about what a new Red Dead might look/play like. One of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind is whether or not RDR 2 will be set after the events of the previous game or be a completely separate narrative with new characters. Well, if one particularly observant Reddit user is correct in their findings, Red Dead Redemption 2 has ‘prequel’ written all over it.
Redditor BlueSaber80 has claimed to figure out who the protagonists of RDR 2 are and it turns out that the answer was hiding in plain sight all along.
That’s a zoomed in look at Rockstar’s announcement poster, which features a group of seven cowboys. As BlueSaber80 points out, three of these men bear striking resemblances to characters from the original Red Dead Redemption: protagonist John Marston and his former bandit buddies-turned-enemies Dutch and Bill. This would suggest that the sequel will take place during Marston’s outlaw days when he was running with his old gang, with the ability to switch between characters on the fly like in Grand Theft Auto V.
We’ll have to wait for Thursday when Rockstar releases the game’s first trailer to know for sure, but considering designing the game as a prequel is pretty much the only way Rockstar would be able to bring John Marson back as a playable character at this point, this theory certainly is compelling.
