In a strange turn of events, Bungie has recast the role of Ghost, the talkative robot companion from last year’s best-selling game Destiny. In an interview with Game Informer, Bungie revealed that they will be replacing original voice actor Peter Dinklage with Nolan North, a.k.a. the voice of almost every major video game character in the last decade.
While it’s not uncommon for actors to be replaced, especially when it comes to voiceover work, the most surprising part of this story is that Dinklage is effectively being erased from the game once the upcoming expansion, The Taken King, is released on September 15th. North actually re-recorded all of Dinklage’s lines from the original game, in an effort to keep things consistent.
“We wanted Nolan North’s version of the Ghost to wake you up at the start of the journey at level one and follow you all the way to level forty,” says creative director Luke Smith.
As a character, Ghost was not well-received, although it’s difficult to say whether it was Dinklage’s delivery that was at fault or the grating, repetitive nature of the character’s dialogue itself. Thankfully, North seems aware of the criticisms and hopes his portrayal will lead to better player-Ghost relations: “I’m hoping we’re doing this for years. If I get a chance to continue with the role, I think we can evolve Ghost as we move forward over the years. In the same way that the player learns about the game and the world, maybe the Ghost grows with them.”
