According to a Japanese financial report, Nintendo is working on two new consoles: the Wii U successor codenamed NX that we already know about and a handheld device codenamed the MH.
The report, which was originally revealed by a Yahoo Japan finance story, indicates that the MH will be Nintendo’s next-gen handheld console. The translation is as follows:
“The driving force up until now has been new business from ‘health services, theme parks and mobile games etc’ but will switch over to the next generation game system (NX) and next-gen handheld game device (MH (temporary name)).'”
This is the first time that the MH, ostensibly a successor to the 3DS, has been mentioned. Rumors have suggested that the NX will be a hybrid device that can be used both as a home and portable console, so the reveal that Nintendo could also be working on a dedicated portable device is surprising.
Nintendo announced earlier this year that they will be officially unveiling the NX sometime before its March 2017 release, but the company will not be discussing the console at this year’s E3 event.
