Devil May Cry 5 isn’t going to be a single-player only affair.

As revealed by a TGS demo and PlayStation Store listing, the upcoming action game will support both microtransactions and online multiplayer. Gamespot reports that DMC 5’s in-game currency (red orbs) can be purchased with real world money. In previous Devil May Cry games, these orbs could only be earned through gameplay and are used to purchase weapon upgrades, consumables, and new abilities.

Series director Hideaki Itsuno was asked why microtransactions are being included and unsurprisingly, he trotted out a familiar line about offering “player choice”: “With giving people the ability to purchase Red Orbs, it’s something we want to give people as an option,” Itsuno said. “If they want to save time and just want to get all the stuff at once, those people can do that.”

While he didn’t offer specifics over how long it will take players to earn Red Orbs naturally through gameplay, Itsuno did note that the cost of upgrades are balanced with the game’s design.

As for multiplayer, Devilmaycry.org notes that the PlayStation Store listing reveals multiplayer for 2-3 players. When asked for comment by Eurogamer, Itsuno said “Wait and see … we have designed this game specifically to make the best single-player experience we can.”

Whatever form the multiplayer takes, it’s sure to not be as controversial with the Devil May Cry fan community as the news about microtransactions. We’ll have to wait and see just how egregious these “pay-to-win” elements are when Devil May Cry 5 releases March 8, 2019 for PS4 and Xbox One.
