After teasing a major announcement last week, Rockstar has released a new trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2.
The trailer reveals the first official story details for the game, which will be a prequel to the 2010 open world western game featuring a new protagonist named Arthur Morgan, replacing John Marston from the first game.

According to Rockstar, the game is “the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive.”
Interestingly, the Van der Linde gang is also known as Dutch’s Gang, the very same gang that John Marston would eventually join (and leave).
Speculation had pegged Red Dead Redemption 2 as a prequel set to the east of the first game’s location, including a version of the fictional city of New Bordeaux, the setting of another Rockstar game, Mafia 3. The trailer appears to confirm both of these details and even features a younger version of Dutch, Marston’s former gang leader-turned-adversary from the first game.
In addition to these story details, the game will have an online mode set in the main game world, suggesting that Red Dead Online will be very similar to the wildly successful GTA Online template.
Rockstar still hasn’t set a firm release date, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is still slated for a Spring 2018 release on PS4 and Xbox One.
