Super Mario Maker is one of the most popular games on the much-maligned Nintendo Wii U console, and now it’s going to be available for those who own Nintendo’s portable system as well on December 2nd. That was the announcement today, as Nintendo revealed a “scaled-down” version of the game that would be available for the 3DS just in time for Christmas, containing many (but not all) of the features found in the Wii U game. The game will come with 100 levels created by Nintendo, and the ability to download other levels, although unlike the Wii U version, you can’t search for levels by ID number for some reason.

Of course, since this is Nintendo, there has to be one glaring error, and in this case, it would have to be the fact that the game will not allow you to share your levels online, although it does promise the ability to share them locally through WiFi connections and StreetPass. Given that a large amount of the appeal of the title was the ability to have people all over the world play your created levels, we’re not entirely sure this is a good move by Nintendo, but it does provide an alternative for people who don’t own a Wii U, but do have a 3DS (which, given that Nintendo’s handheld has outsold the Wii U by a ridiculous margin, is fairly likely).
