Microsoft Reveals First 13 Original Xbox Games For Xbox One Compatibility

Microsoft

Original Xbox games are finally getting backwards compatibility on the Xbox One and Microsoft has announced the first round of games making their way to the service.

Starting tomorrow, October 24, the following 13 games will be playable on Xbox One:

  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  • Ninja Gaiden Black
  • Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
  • Fuzion Frenzy
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • Psychonauts
  • Dead to Rights
  • Black
  • Grabbed by the Ghoulies
  • Sid Meier’s Pirates!
  • Red Faction II
  • BloodRayne 2
  • The King of Fighters Neowave

Each game will be enhanced with 1080p resolution, higher and/or smoother framerates, and faster loading times. If you still own the original Xbox disc, just insert it into your Xbox One console. Otherwise, the games can be purchased digitally from the Xbox Store for $9.99.

As IGN notes, games such as Crimson Skies that support System Link multiplayer still work and actually work across different consoles, so you could have one person on an original Xbox play with someone running the game on an Xbox One. Online multiplayer is not supported, however, given that servers for original Xbox games were shut down years ago.

It’s unclear at this time which games will be made backwards compatible next but as Xbox platform lead Bill Stillwell tells IGN, it may be impossible from a legal standpoint to get certain titles on the service. “A curated list of key games was the way to go with this,” Stillwell said, noting that certain publisher don’t exist anymore, contracts may be missing, or there could be licensing issues with certain songs.

Which original Xbox game are you most excited to play again? Personally, I’m going to be busting out Fuzion Frenzy again with some buddies and maybe check out KOTOR if I have time.
