Players have discovered a ton of cool Easter eggs in the PS4’s incredible new Spider-Man game, but developer Insomniac Games is looking to remove an in-game marriage proposal that sadly went awry.
In May of this year, Tyler Schultz tweeted at Insomniac Games asking if the developer could help him with a marriage proposal to his girlfriend of five years. The devs agreed, but asked if he could wait until the game was released on September 7. Upon release, players discovered Schultz’ proposal – “Maddie, will you marry me?” – on an in-game movie theatre marquee. Unfortunately, Schultz is now single and what’s worse, he says his girlfriend left him for his brother!
According to a report from Polygon, Schultz uploaded a video explaining what happened, but it has since been taken down for violating YouTube’s terms of service. In the video, Schultz explains that, “The thing that sucks about this Easter egg is the date I’m making this video now, three, four weeks ago, my girlfriend dumped me to go with my brother, basically throwing away the five years we had together.” Schultz said.
“This might go down in history as the saddest Easter egg? I don’t know. Regardless, I’m actually kind of happy that it’s in this game … If anybody else wants to use that as their proposal, please do … I just want to see someone get married through this thing.”
In response to the sad news, Insomniac art director Jacinda Chew has offered to remove the Easter egg by changing the sign to something else. “That sucks! Want us to change the sign to something else in a patch? Any suggestions?” Chew tweeted after hearing the news. The thread has since been deleted, with the only remaining tweet saying, “Ok, now people are being mean. Commence thread deletion.”
We’ll have to wait and see if the Easter egg gets a change or not. For more on Marvel’s Spider-Man, be sure to read our review (spoiler alert: we really, really liked it) and whether or not playing on PS4 Pro or PS4 makes much of a difference.
