Apparently Ubisoft missed the memo on the whole Star Wars Battlefront II loot box controversy from just a couple months ago because the publisher is now adding a randomized rewards system to one of its biggest games from 2017.
Ghost Recon: Wildlands is the latest AAA game to adopt a loot box system but Ubisoft is taking steps to assure fans that the boxes only contain items that have no effect on gameplay stats, and are just cosmetic items for character customization.
According to the Ubisoft blog, Battle Crates – which are available today in the Extended Ops update – will be divided into separate loot boxes for the campaign and co-op mode (Spec Ops Crates), and player-vs-player Ghost War mode (Ghost War Crates). All crate types will “have zero impact on gameplay and player’s progression, and will be “fair in terms of the items given to players.”
Spec Ops Crates will contain rare Epic and Exotic weapons, as well as cosmetic items. Ghost War Crates also contain Exotic weapons, but they are re-skinned versions of weapons already in the game with no different in stats. Ghost War Crates also contain new character skins – called Icons – and other customization items.
Unlike similar loot boxes in other games, Wildland’s will contain no duplicates, meaning that you’ll only ever earn items that you don’t already own.
All Ghost Recon: Wildlands players will be gifted a Spec Ops and Ghost War Crate once they’re available, redeemable on the Ubisoft Club. After that, you can get them in the store, where they’ll set you back 400 Credits (Wildland’s in-game currency – I have no idea what that converts to in actual dollars).
