The first Gears of War title for the Xbox One debuted its trailer last night, and fans of the franchise will recognize a familiar style — heartbreaking moments of isolation with a mournful cover version of an already-sad song. The original Gears had the memorable “Mad World” trailer, and Gears 2 featured “How It Ends” as Dom stares at a fading photo of his wife.
Then Gears 3 gave us the best of the bunch, with “Heron Blue” by Sun Kil Moon playing as Marcus Fenix and his fellow COG soldiers fight through a graveyard of humans who have literally been turned to ash. In fact, here’s a YouTube compilation of all three, if you need a refresher.
And here’s the Gears 4 trailer, starring Marcus’s son J.D., including sadness-inducing flashbacks.
