Of the former International champions who qualified for TI6, only the most recent one, Evil Geniuses, remains in this year’s tournament, as Natus Vincere (TI1) went down on Day One, while Alliance (TI3), and Newbee (TI4) were both eliminated on Day Three. Alliance just couldn’t maintain an early lead in either of their games and fell to Fnatic, while Newbee was simply outclassed by Team Liquid, who look to have shaken off the issues that plagued their Group Stage games and relegated them to the Lower Bracket. Meanwhile in the Upper Bracket, Wings Gaming defeated MVP Phoenix to guarantee themselves a top 3 finish, and Evil Geniuses beat EHOME to do the same, which included an incredible Game One where EG came back from Mega Creeps for the first time in International history to steal the victory, in a game which may have been one of the greatest ever played.
Upper Bracket (Best of 3)
Wings Gaming d. MVP Phoenix (2-0)
Evil Geniuses d. EHOME (2-0)
Lower Bracket (Best of 3)
Fnatic d. Alliance (2-0)
Team Liquid d. Newbee (2-1)
Alliance and Newbee join Team OG and LGD Gaming with a 9th-12th place finish, securing just over $300,000 in prize money. For Day Four, it’s all Lower Bracket, as Digital Chaos vs face TNC Gaming for the right to meet EHOME later that day, and Team Liquid will take on Fnatic, with the winner of that match facing MVP Phoenix on Day Five.
