DOTA 2 International 6: Group Stage Day 3 – European Descent

The Group Stage of The International finished up with each team having two games left to play, and all of them still with a shot (however unlikely) at a spot in the Upper Bracket of the Main Event. Ultimately, the top two teams in both groups maintained their positions on top, with OG leapfrogging Evil Geniuses to finish atop Group A, while EHOME and Digital Chaos battled down to the very final game to determine 1st and 2nd in Group B, with EHOME pulling out the top spot in the end.

Meanwhile, the European teams in attendance continued to have a difficult time at TI6, as 4 of the 6 EU teams in attendance finished in the Lower Bracket, including Team Liquid and Natus Vincere, who had both received direct invites to the tournament and were considered favorites to finish high in the tournament. Instead, thanks to their poor finishes, there’s a chance that at least one of them will be guaranteed to finish in the bottom spot of the whole event.

With the Group Stages done, the Main Event begins, starting with setting up the brackets. The top 4 teams in each group begin in the Upper Bracket (guaranteeing they can finish no lower than 9-12th, a nearly $200k jump in prize money over 13th-16th), with 1st place in each group getting to choose their opponent from the 3rd and 4th place finishers in the other group, and 2nd place playing the remaining team. The same is true in the Lower Bracket (albeit their first match will be Best-of-1 instead of Best-of-3), with 5th place choosing their opponent from the 7th and 8th place finishers in the other group.

The final standings are below. The Main Event begins in earnest on Monday, August 8th, from the Key Arena in Seattle, with nearly $20 million in prize money on the line!

Group A

1. Team OG (11-3)
2. Evil Geniuses (9-5)
3. Wings Gaming (8-6)*
4. Alliance (8-6)*
5. TNC Gaming (7-7)
6. Natus Vincere (6-8)
7. LGD Gaming (5-9)
8. Escape Gaming (2-12)

* – Wings beat Alliance 2-0 in their Round Robin match, earning the tiebreaker for 3rd, which doesn’t matter because the #1 team in Group B can choose to face either of them anyway.

Group B

1. EHOME (12-2)
2. Digital Chaos (11-3)
3. Newbee (8-6)
4. MVP Phoenix (6-8)
5. Fnatic (5-9)**
6. Team Secret (5-9)**
7. Team Liquid (5-9)**
8. Vici Gaming Reborn (4-10)

** – The three teams remained tied after the first tiebreaker (Round Robin record against each other). For the second tiebreaker (Round Robin record against lower-ranked teams), Fnatic and Secret both beat Vici Gaming Reborn while Liquid lost, dropping them to seventh. Fnatic then claimed fifth due to their 2-0 victory over Secret in the Round Robin.
